WRC's Black Lives Matter Statement

Dear friends of WRC,

During this time of grief, trauma, and call to action, the WRC Staff and Board stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters who are protesting the gruesome killing of George Floyd in Minnesota at the hands of four policemen. The time to dismantle acts of violence, racism, and police brutalities perpetrated against black and brown communities has been long overdue. It is vital for us to identify ways we can help end the issues that have plagued our communities for generations. Women's Refugee Care is committed to dismantling all forms of anti-Black racism and injustice. We will continue to do our best to make our communities safe places where people of color can not only live comfortably but thrive. A few ways we are doing this include creating professional leadership opportunities for our youth; encouraging economic empowerment; encouraging speech that is clear, loud, and bold; advocating for the needs of our community’s incredibly hard-working members; and providing Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion training. We will continue prioritizing Black voices that have repeatedly gone unheard.

We, unfortunately, do not have all the answers. I personally fled persecution, violence, and death in the Congo yet find myself stranded in the middle of a vast ocean again. But, I remember that we made a commitment to educating ourselves and the community, creating partnerships to foster equitable living, and dismantling any and all forms of racism and oppression to create a world where every Black person can have the social, economical, and political power to succeed.

We thank you for all of your support and invite you to join the movement. By doing so, we can nurture our refugees and Black people who have lost family members to the police - who are supposed to provide protection. We will foster a culture in Rhode Island and America where every person is heard,

seen, and supported. We will cultivate a society where we collectively care and restore one another.

We wholeheartedly believe that all Black Lives Matter.

My very best,

Aline Binyungu

Executive Director
